As If
© 2000 Laurie Story Vela

I  will live this day as if time is my friend.
I  will live this day as if time never ends.
Drinking the moments with a grateful thirst.
I  will live today as if it is my first.

Chorus:
As if this life were created by me.
As if my life were full of possibilities.
As if, as if, as if I  can.
As if, as if, as if I  am.

I  will live this day as if dreams do come true.
I  will live this day as if I’m never through.
Drinking the colors of sunrise and set.
I  will live today as if as if I  won’t forget.

Chorus

I  will live this day as if I  am so rich.
I  will live this day as if I’ve found my nitch.
Drinking pure waters that abundantly fall.
I  will live today as if I  have it all.

Chorus

Sacred Ground

(Drum echo song )

Sacred Ground
You have called me here
Mother Sound
You whisper loud and clear
Boundaries stand tall
Higher is Your Call
Call of Mother Sound
Call to Sacred Ground
Sacred Ground
You call high
Wings of butterfly
Branches dancing
Dancing in the sky
Sacred Mother You Call High

Sacred Ground
You call low
Tiny rocks that glow
Crawling ones
Crawling where they go
Sacred Mother You Call Low

Sacred Ground
I will walk Your Mother Sound
High and Low
I will walk the ground I know
Wherever I may go
I walk the Sacred Flow
Sacred Ground
You are rooted in my soul
You are rooted in my soul
Sacred seeds to sow
I walk the Sacred Flow
Sacred Ground

Starlight
© 1998 Laurie Vela

I'm looking up in a twilight sky
seeing you here in my mind's eye ...
Starlight, star bright, I wish you well tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might
wrap you in love with this starlight ...
Starlight, star bright, I wish you love.

And I wish you dreams wherever you are.
I'm wishing you dreams on this bright star.
Starlight, star bright I wish you dreams tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might
wrap you in dreams with this starlight.
Starlight, star bright I wish you dreams.
And I wish you hope wherever you are.
I'm wishing you hope with this bright star.
Starlight, star bright, I wish you hope tonite.
I wish I may, I wish I might
wrap you in hope with this starlight...
Starlight, star bright I wish you hope.

Love, dreams and hope, starlight, star bright.
I wish I may, I wish I might
bring love, dreams and hope to you tonite ...
Starlight, star bright, I wish you well ....

Celestial Dreams
©1997 Laurie Vela

The sun kissed me awake this morning
stars sang me lullabies last night
moonbeams deemed we’ll run away and dream
winds whispered we’ll be back at dawn’s 1st light
Chorus:
Ooohh mother nature ooohhh father sky
sunlight streams, starlight gleams, moonbeams delight
in celestial flight
oohh in celestial dreams x2
Pink clouds billowed across my pillow
raindrops sizzled in steaming sunlight
colorful hues appeared as they do
rainbow cheered take dancing flight
in my light
Chorus
The sun hugged the mountain this evening
streaks of purple in the blue hugged me
wishing star winked and whistled let’s dream
twilight sang softly in dusk we can see …
sweet serenity
Chorus
in celestial dreams it seems if we try
we can fly so high across the sky
in celestial dreams x4

Somewhere Tonight © 1998 Laurie Vela

Somewhere tonight water is shimmering in this moonlight;
lovers holding hands, walking in the sand.
They think they understand and that life is grand
somewhere tonight.

Somewhere tonight, there’s pain and there’s strife;
A husband beats up his wife.
People hurting each other, their own sisters and brothers
somewhere tonight.

Chorus:
There’s love and light somewhere tonight.
There’s hate on the fight somewhere tonight.
There’s black and there’s white, there’s wrong and there’s right
Somewhere tonight, somewhere tonight, somewhere tonight.

Somewhere tonight, new life begins.
Baby after baby are coming in.
The cycle of birth pulsating the earth.
The time to be born is just a question of when.

Somewhere tonight, life is going out
leaving some to wonder what it’s all about.
Some pull their own trigger and stumble to the grave
While some sleep in peace wherever they lay
somewhere tonight.

Chorus

Somewhere tonight, people gather in prayer;
They collectively care and they want to share.
United in heart, they pray each one to do their part,
somewhere tonight.
Somewhere tonight, there’s a raging roar
from the wages of war, destroying more and more;
the living left ill by the blood that’s spilled,
somewhere tonight.

Chorus (fade out)

When Children Suffer ©1996 Laurie Vela

When children suffer do angels cry?
Is there grace when innocence must die?
When naked pureness comes to harm,
who has the right to bare arms?
*And if a child cries out in the night,
does an angel stop in flight?

Gathered to separate truth from lies,
she’s only 5, there’s pain in her eyes.
She sits in awe inside a court of law,
her tiny voice saturates the silence.
She solemnly speaks of invasive violence,
trust traded for lust.
He told her he loved her as he took off her clothes
but somehow she knows that’s not how love goes
Chorus
*And if a child cries out this isn’t right,
does an angel stop in flight?

Battered and bruised another child is abused,
his pleading refused, in vain he tries to understand.
In pain, he cries with every slap of the hand.
He’s been hit, he’s been tossed, he’s been thrown.
He’s lost whatever trust he’s ever known,
confined by what’s defined.
Every day a new scar,
every night, he wishes upon a star.
Chorus
*And if a child cries out in the night I don’t want to fight
does an angel stop in flight

Scared and confused, the boy who was abused,
grows up in a hurry in the wake of fury.
Destined to fail, he’s in and out of jail,
rage held in a cage.
His despair beyond repair
gushes into a flood of innocent blood.
His rage goes wild, he murders a child,
no one hears her cries in the night …
Then silently she takes flight
Chorus
*And if a child is murdered in the night,
does an angel stop in flight?
Oooaaaah …. when children suffer!

Yuppie Guppy
©1993 Laurie Vela

Chorus:
Yuppie guppy! Swimming in a bowl!
Money is the goal
When you’re a yuppie guppy!
Fill your bowl with things! See what money brings!
When you’re a guppy!
A yuppie guppy!
Yuppie guppy in a bowl!

Pretty little condos all in a row.
Manicured lawns the gardener must mow.
Landscapes display, not one spec of lenience.
Inside you’ll find … every modern convenience!
There’s juicers, slicers, toasters and woks,
Bread machines, pasta makers, soup crocks and cutting blocks.
Knife racks, wine racks, rice cookers too.
Machines for grinding beans, only espresso cappuccino will do!
There’s water filters, dish washers, well stocked liquor bars,
TVs, stereos, CD’s and VCR’s.
Machines will answer your phone, your home is never alone,
Information never lacks, you can send a fax!
Computers and e-mail round out the barrage,
Hang up  your cellular phone, beep the car alarm,
Hit the remote control garage!

Chorus

Pretty prim bodies, fit and trim.
Let’s go to the gym, combat cellulite disaster
With stair master, thigh master,
Walking, jogging, running, faster, faster, faster!
Lift weights, weight train, do you swim?
It’s oh so important that we stay thin!
Yes, let’s go to the gym!
Afterwards we’ll sip espresso cappuccino!
We’ll do breakfast, we’ll do brunch,
We’ll do coffee, we’ll do lunch,
we’ll sip wine, we’ll feel fine,
after nine, it’s out to dinner
or processed food is always a winner.
Later, we’ll vacation, we really do deserve it.
A vacay is for our stress, the therapist says it will unnerve it!

Chorus

Pretty plump babies, sucking silver spoons.
Hear the nanny croon from the monitor
Placed in the Fisher Price nursery room.
Stuffed bears stack by the musical night light.
Plastic sealing Genie stands to take the dirty dipes,
Plastic plug in box warms up the throw away wipes.
The dancing mobiles hang above the Martha Stewart crib,
Mickey Mouse and Winnie dance o
n diapers and the bibs.
Then oh what you get, when you get to be a kid …
There’s big wheels, hot wheels, trikes, bikes and plastic cars,
Barney sings on CDs and teltubbies dance on  VCRs,
beaniebabies, baby dolls Barbie dolls and their accessories for use,
drink from plastic sippy cups and boxes of juice
Happy meals for fun, shoes that light up when you run,
Legos you can stack in your Barbie backpack.
Pack your toys and snacks, unlatch the plastic gate,
Load up the windstar van, come on, we’re running late,
We’ve meeting friends in the park for a soccer play date!

Hang Up
© 1997 Laurie Vela

Chorus:
Hang up the phone, hang up the phone
When there’s nothin’ left to say.
Leave it alone, take charge of your own.
Stop. Hang up. Go your own way.
You gotta know when it’s time to disconnect the line.
Take charge of your own and hang up the phone.

Some drone on and on and on and on
‘bout whatever it is wrong.
Some drone on and on and on and on
One long sad, sad song.
Wrong, wrong, wrong, they drone on and on.
Dronin’ and drownin’ day and night,
They can tell you what’s wrong but can they tell you what is right?
Please tell ya what’s right.
CHORUS
Some ring the line but they lack the rhyme
 to say anything at all.
Suffer in silence, hide all the pain, sweep it away,
It’ll all be o.k., suffer in silence, it doesn’t exist.
Suffer in silence, suffer in silence, suffer in silence.
They can deny, wipe the slate dry
But can they cry for what they deny?
Oh can they cry, cry in defiance.
Can they break, break the silence?
Please, break the silence.

CHORUS (Fade out last line)

The Best Of Me
© 2000 Laurie Story Vela

When i’m cornered by my smallness, cut off by all my wallness,
reaching for my tallness, that’s when i find you.

When i’m choking on the sadness, overwhelmed by all the madness,
reaching for my gladness, that’s when i find you.

You are the best in me, the one that sets me free,
you are the one i see ... when i look into the mirror.

Maybe you’re an angel, maybe you’re the light.
Maybe you’re the part of me that knows everything’s all right.
I will fight to find you. I will walk beside you.
I will reach to guide you always in my life.

You are the best in me, the one that sets me free,
you are the one i see ... when i let go of the fear
and i look into the mirror!

So if i feel like hiding, even feel like dying,
reaching through my crying, that’s when i’ll find you.
I will be an angel. I will be the light.
Reaching in for who i am and what i know is right.
I am the best in me, the one that sets me free,
I am the one i see ...
when i let go of the fear and i am fully here!

Reach
© 1998 Laurie Vela

If you want more, do more, be more of who you are.
If you want more, see more, reach up for the stars.

Chorus:
Reach out for what you want.
Reach in for who you are.
Reach down for your roots.
Reach up for your star.
Reach up to your star!

If you want love, be love, act all the love you can.
If you want help, be help, look around, reach out your hand.

Chorus

If you want gold, be gold, shine the riches of your soul.
If you want home, be home, let yourself be whole.

Chorus

Reach out, reach in, reach down, reach up.
You are, you are, you are a shining star!

I’ll Be Your Shadow
© 1999 Laurie Vela

I’ll be your shadow when you need shade.
I’ll be the sunshine when you need rays.
I’ll be the water when you are dry.
I’ll be the mountain when you need to climb high.

Chorus:
Like an egg in the nest,
like the roots of a tree,
I’ll hold you in love,
you can depend on me.

I’ll be your umbrella when it’s pouring down rain.
I’ll be a warm blanket when you’re cold or in pain.
I’ll be the promise that you can keep.
I’ll be the lullaby that sings you to sleep.

Chorus

I’ll be the wide world when you need to roam.
I’ll be the ticket when it’s time to come home.
I’ll be an honest answer when you need the truth.
I’ll be the silence when what you need is you.
Chorus (Repeat lines and fade out)

When Dreams Die
©1994 Laurie Vela

Sarah and Dan built the house of their dreams
while they lived in a trailer and just beyond their means.
The house took its course, the force caused them to divorce.
Now Sarah dreams alone, renting the rooms of their home.

Chorus:
Where do dreams go when they die?
Do they live in salty tears that dreams cry?
Or do they float to a home where hope can make them fly?
When dreams die, where do they go? Does anybody know?

Bill has 2 kids, on weekends they are his.
The girls have 2 houses where they live.
One family, 2 homes. On Monday, Bill’s alone
wondering why their dream had to die.
Chorus

Juan and his family moved to richer land
with working hand and fearless pride
that were no match for insecticide.
When Juan died, his family also died inside.
Nowhere to reside, their dream had lied.

Chorus with Bridge
Bridge:
A house is a home but dreams are of the heart.
Can there be home when dreams are torn apart?
Is home a feeling, a person or a place?
Can dreams find home in empty space?
Chorus

All My Relations

© 1998 Laurie Vela Flower Seed

Here's the first version written and sung while raking the Medicine Wheel
as the Sundance Lodge was being taken down. Sunday, June 28, 1998.

All my relations, all my relations,
all my relations are here with me.
All my relations, all my relations,
all my relations are here with me.

People of the past,
people of the now,
people yet to come are here with me.

The mountains and the trees,
rivers and the seas,
all my relations are here with me.

The spiders and the bees,
mosquitos and the fleas,
all my relations are here with me.

The sound of the breeze,
the doors and the keys,
all my relations are here with me.

The moon and the sun
and everything to come.
The song is never done of my relations.

All my relations, all my relations,
all my relations are here with me.
All my relations, all my relations,
all my relations are here with me.

This is a zipper song which means you can "zip" in any lines you want.
They don't have to rhyme. This first version may be the easiest to do that with.
I went on to write lots of things to zip in and crafted them
a little different in this 2nd version ...

All My Relations
© 1998 Laurie Vela Flower Seed

Chorus:
All my relations, all my relations,
all my relations are here with me.
All my relations, all my relations,
all my relations are here with me.

People of the past, people here and now,
people yet to come are here with me.
The young and the old, the weak and the bold,
all their stories told are here with me.

Chorus

The mountains standing high, the blue of the sky,
the winged ones who fly are here with me.
The ground i'm standing on, the waterfall's song,
the pines tall and long are here with me.

Chorus

All my flower friends, their petals and their stems,
the sweet smells of them are here with me.
Big granite rocks, loud bluejay squawks,
flight of redtail hawks are here with me.

Chorus:

The germs of disease, the roaches and the fleas,
mosquitos and the bees are here with me.
Hurricanes and floods, the sliding of the mud,
the earthquake thuds are here with me.

Chorus

The hungar and the pain, the fall of acid rain,
the things we can't explain are here with me.
All the times of war, every retail store,
oil spills on the shore are here with me.

Chorus

The food from the land, all the working hands,
the package and the can are here with me.
The plants and the beasts who give their lives to feast,
yes, all the lives we eat are here with me.

Chorus

Whatever money's worth, every baby's birth,
the heartbeats of the earth are here with me.
The moon and the sun and everything to come,
the song of my relations is never done!

Chorus

Verses can be general or specific like saying "trees" or
"The redwood ring, apple tree in spring ..." etc.
Again, you can do verses that don't rhyme and it will sound fine.
i.e. "The sparks of the fire, the stars in the sky,
the miles I have come are here with me."
Zip in and out whatever relations you like!
Truly, the song is never done!
